H-hey, don't go falling! [Hello, Luceti, it seems that one of the journals out there has decided to turn on the video feature to show you one lovely ceiling, with rather creepy shallow breathing heard in the background. Before long a frazzled Kaori pops into the picture from the edge of what must be a bed, clearly still half-asleep since her eyes are closed, but... There's a distinct redness to her normally pale complexion, if you catch sight of her reaching around for the fallen book while her cracked voice mutters the occasional word.

... Actually, she's reaching out a little too far from the bed...

Damn it, where did you – Agh?! [And down she goes toppling in a tangled mess of blankets to the floor, because depth perception sucks when you're feeling so damn sick, right? Someone save her from the blanket monster!] Ow!

[ — He thinks he's getting the gist of the whole feather thing! He's not got the whole engagement thing out of it yet, but he's getting closer, and since asking is clearly fruitless (something he would be annoyed about if he wasn't so damn confused) he'll just resign himself back to listening. ]

[...Frey you so silly. Masaomi sighs just a little and shrugs]

Mmm~ even if he did, Kaori-chan, I'm not sure I'd accept just like that- after all! I need to worm my way into filling up your heart first, don't I? And I'm not all the way there juuuust yet!

[He laughs]

Actually, I meant that I might accept that feather from the beautiful Freyja-chan, perhaps?!

[Kida you Asshole. He raises his voice a bit.] She has nothing to do with this! Just drop it, it's past!

[Calming and turning to Kaori. because her comment was odd.] I-If you wanted to? It’s not like I have any say in who you date. We’re not really… you know. I think of you like ….well, like a sister.

[She reminds him of Lym at times. It‘s heartwarming.] Though saying that, I don’t think I’d want any sister of mine dating you, Kida.

Actually... you do. [You own her now, Frey. Where is that solution they're supposed to be coming up with, she can't hold back that urge forever.]

[ Ping! He might be underestimating the importance of the feather, but it sounds like him and Kaori need to have a talk about these traditions. He also might be glaring a little at Frey, despite him insisting it's not his place to decide. Great first impressions abound. ]

[...Okay this is bullshit. He sighs and then in the flattest tone ever:]

...Eeeh, Kaori-chan, what if I were to burn that feather? Does your promise still apply?

... He accepted it... [Of course it won't work, we're they just being stupid? It was the physical proof of the promise, not the actual thing itself, the one that is now carved permanently into her psyche.

Besides, that was an absolute rejection. There'd be no way to escape her punishment then.]

[ He doesn't even have a good grasp of what the whole feather thing is and he thinks the suggestion to burn it is dumb. Not that he knows what's going on enough to offer insight, but there might have been a short scoff there. Tsk, tsk. ]

[... Okay, considering this, he doesn't know enough? It's an engagement, right? But Kaori apparently won't just calls it off. That's weird, but then she's always been weird she-

He hasn't thought about it in a while, but what if she isn't human? He's not sure what or the parameters of it, but she's always been weird with him, right? Overly accepting of things he says? More than with any other girl ever he's needed to backpedal with her. Maybe with Frey it's the same. Maybe this whole situation is because she feels she can't go back on this promise but also doesn't want to accept a loss. ...But why? That makes no sense. His eyes go wide with his realization, but there's way too many options.]

...Kaori-chan, forgetting Frey a moment, I'm you knight, remember? I won't allow anything bad to happen to you, like I said. [...Where is he going with this] So that sets us apart from being friends, doesn't it? And Spada-kun, you're her roommate, riiight? That's apart from things too, but you won't let bad things happen to her either.

So, that's how it is.

[...This is complicated his head hurts and this isn't his field. This isn't his forte. This isn't... a lot of things. Knowing Frey, he would have asked to just be friends or come up with some other thing, but girls don't want that out of a man they proposed do, do they? He's got no idea what the standards of whatever Kaori is are but...]

Eeeh... it's too much to ask for Frey to marry you though, and I don't think you want him to reject you either, do you? Or maybe you could do both, a divorce? But that's no good for anyone... [This tone is flat, but the pitch fluctuates. The gears are turning, but he cannot see a solution. It's a catch-22 and he hates these things. If they weren't both friends he would just beat up the one who wasn't. As it stands though-

Anyway as it stands-] So Frey, you know you just can't be a friend to a girl you've been engaged to, right? It's a bit more complicated... ah, but you might know that, wouldn't you? You'll make a new title, maybe? [...]

[He knew that, but it was just an experiment, right? This was too convoluted, too different from his world's ways. His former idea of an engagement was inevitably having the choice made for him by someone else, even if his parents had told him it wouldn't be that way, the senate would have managed otherwise eventually with the way things had been.

But he now had too much freedom and not enough time to realize what that meant and-

I can't keep the promise... [There goes that mantra again, alongside her body beginning to shake again. She'd held back the urge up until now, but the fresh reminder that she'd failed...

But she was obligated to answer them, right? She can't go punishing herself until that was fulfilled, at least.]

I can't keep a promise, so... I have to pay the price. Because we can't break a promise, na? Our minds won't let us, especially one made to a Human... See, I can't stop thinking about it? And this was one of the most sacred promises...

[At this point she pushes away from Frey with enough strength to force him to let go, that single thought going through her mind as she reached out toward the nightstand where she and Spada knew several of her knives were stored: she can't keep the promise.]

And Frey accepted it, so I have to keep the promise even if he rejects the offer, because I made the promise to him. And I can't keep it, na? So so... [If she's so terrified, then why was she smiling?]

The darkest sin was committed against the most sacred promise, and that sin has to be punished because it's unforgivable. I don't want to, but I have to, na? Because these feelings won't go away until I pay the price, that's how we were created. Promises can't be broken, so if they are we can't escape that part of what our minds tell us we must do, na... I promised my life, so I have to pay the equivalent because I can't keep the promise, that's how it works...

[ Panic shock horror as she goes for that drawer, especially in combination with what she's saying, and he seizes her hands before they can get there with a grip that's careful but firm. He's blindsided by all the new information, but one thing is extremely clear to him and that's his biggest concern right now. ]

[ He's not exactly an advocate of breaking promises but there's no way in hell he's about to let Kaori decide she needs to die for doing it, even if it is something that's just ingrained in her. But, ah, the situation's more complicated than that. Turning his attention toward Frey. ]

You guys are tryin' to think of a different promise, yeah? One you'd be able to keep? [ If it sounds accusatory, he doesn't mean for it to; he's just riled up. ] Why not just somethin' like stayin' by your side? [ It's — still her life, but it's a lot more open to interpretation than marriage. ]

Well there's the clincher, and now everything is much clearer. Masaomi, not being in the room, can't get the context of Spada's reaction or what movements Kaori might be doing to accompany that ridiculous speech. All he's got is the audio, and the audio - while disturbing - allows him to reach one practical conclusion. Thus, in a very flat tone Masaomi throws out:]

...Frey, can you listen to me? I've got an order for you to give Kaori-chan.

[...]

Command her not to hurt herself over this failure.

[Frey doesn't even know what she's reaching for, an is down right horrified at all this. She's hurt herself.... because of him? But he couldn't-

No. No. Not again. Never again.

He's going to reach past Spada and grab her too, not hugging, the position is too awkward, but placing hands on her shoulder. Even if Kida hadn't said what he did, he'd have done this anyway.] Kaori, Listen to me.

Promise me, please [The tone in his voice is slightly choked. This is important, he's scared. Deathly afraid of someone getting hurt because of him again. Of Kaori being hurt, hurting herself over something he can‘t do.] Don't hurt yourself over this.

[Frey's words make her go still, hearing the pain behind them. Why was that there? Really, you Humans of Luceti are so strange like this, asking her to not hurt herself and caring about her. Why did they...?

And why would they listen to her request and actually try to stop her? Didn't they see the gravity of the sin she committed? But Frey ordered, and Spada didn't want it... and neither did Masaomi, it seemed.

Promising to not hurt herself... She's shaking again from the effort, but it's something she could do just barely while she stops reaching for that drawer, eyes wide as she struggles with the typhoon of emotions within herself. She can try...]
